PEX vs Copper: What We Use When We Replace Poly B
When we pull Poly B out of a Surrey home, we usually put PEX-A back in. Here's why, and when copper still makes sense.
When we pull Poly B out of a Surrey home, we almost always put PEX-A back in. Copper still has a place. Here's how we decide, and what you should know before you pick.
What We Usually Install: PEX-A
PEX-A is cross-linked polyethylene. It's flexible, freeze-resistant, and rated for decades of service. It snakes through existing pathways better than rigid pipe, which means fewer drywall openings and a cleaner job.
Why PEX-A over PEX-B or PEX-C?
- Most flexible of the three, so fewer fittings and less stress on joints
- Best freeze recovery if a section freezes
- Expansion fittings create a strong seal without crimp rings that can work loose
- Proven track record in Canadian homes with chlorinated water
When Copper Still Makes Sense
Some homeowners want copper for tradition, resale preference, or specific short runs. Copper is durable and fire-resistant. It also costs more in material and labour, and it needs more open wall access because it doesn't bend like PEX.
We'll install copper if you ask for it. Just know the trade-offs: more cutting, more soldering, and usually a longer job.
What About Mixing Materials?
Short answer: we don't leave Poly B in place and patch around it. The whole point of a repipe is to get Poly B out of the supply system. Mixing copper and PEX on new runs is fine when done right. Leaving Poly B "for now" is how you end up with another leak two years later.
What We Recommend for Most Surrey Homes
Full Poly B removal, PEX-A throughout, City of Surrey permit, pressure test, and final inspection. That's the setup that protects your insurance file and your resale. If you prefer copper, we'll price it and walk you through the difference before we start.
Questions about materials? Call us. We'd rather explain it on the phone than leave you guessing on a quote sheet.
